The couple married when Ron was only 21 years old. In an interview with HuffPost Live, he acknowledged that they weren’t expected to have a long-lasting marriage.
‘Never anybody else’
“I felt really lucky when we met,” he added. “It’s crazy — we were teenagers, it shouldn’t have worked. We got married young, that shouldn’t have worked either, and yet it really and truly has.”
When they first met Ron was a junior at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, California.
“I met her, and there was never anybody else,” the Oscar winner said in an interview with People.
Writer and actress Cheryl Howard, formerly Alley, and Ron have three daughters and a son together. Their eldest daughter Bryce Dallas Howard has two children.
Ron and Cheryl celebrated 44 years of marriage on June 7. When asked what their secret was Ron admitted that there was a little luck involved.
‘Real blessing’
“It does take a little luck to grow together and that’s what’s required. Compatibility and her good patience,” Ron said “It’s been a real blessing.”
The former TV star left the show “Happy Days” in 1980 to focus more on directing and has since directed more than 25 movies.
He said that people often ask him how their marriage has lasted so long, and he always emphasizes the importance of communication.
“There’s no tactic other than communication is really important. You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in constructive ways,” he explained.
‘Unbelievably supportive’
Cheryl has appeared in 11 movies, directed by Ron, and written several books including ‘In the Face of Jinn: A Novel.’ Yet she still finds time to be a huge support for her husband.
“She’s (Cheryl) unbelievably supportive and always has been. Our compatibility has endured through all kinds of experiences,” Ron said.
