Six-year-old Faye Swetlik, whose body was found in woods near her home, was killed by her 30-year-old neighbor, police say.
The youngster, from South Carolina, went missing from outside her home and was found dead three days later. The coroner in the case has confirmed she died from asphyxiation.
Her 30-year-old neighbor Coty Taylor killed himself shortly after Faye was abducted and police aren’t looking for anyone else in connection with the little girl’s death.
Investigators say they found an item of the girls inside his trash can, according to Fox News.
Sgt Evan Antley, from Cayce Public Sector Department, said: “It was a critical piece of evidence that would have been listed as on her missing person’s file.”
Police added that although they are not looking for anyone else in connection with Faye’s death it is still a homicide investigation and are appealing for any information that would assist them with the case.
“The loss of Faye, an innocent child, who was simply playing in her own yard… has been extremely difficult to all of us,” Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said.
A public memorial for Faye is due to be held on Feb. 21 at Trinity Baptist Church in Cayce.
