As fierce fighting continues across Ukraine, celebrities around the globe are expressing their support for the victims in all of this.
Russia’s attack on Ukraine began in the pre-dawn hours of Moscow on Feb. 24 and a host of countries were quick to issue sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin in a backlash against the invasion.
Everyone from actor and director Sean Penn, Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Mark Ruffalo and even Russian celebrities have come out in support of Ukraine.
Celebrity couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds announced they are matching donations up to $1 million made to USA for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Now Ashton Kutcher has expressed his support for Ukraine.
“I stand with Ukraine,” he tweeted Thursday.
Mila Kunis, Kutcher’s former That ’70s Show co-star and his wife since 2015, was born in Ukraine when it was still part of the former Soviet Union. In 1991 when the actress was 7 years old she and her family moved to the United States.
In July 2016, Kunis described to Conan host Conan O’Brien the moment her parents moved them to the U.S. for a better life but told them they were moving “up the street.”
“And then one day, we weren’t moving up the street,” Kunis said. “We were on a train, and I was like, ‘Whoa, we’re on a train. Where are we going?’ And then we got to Moscow and then we got on a plane, and all of that was very new to me. Like, a train was new. The plane was new. I had Coca-Cola for the first time. The entire experience was very new.”
Kunis said she didn’t even know anything about America and arrived in the country days before starting school in LA not knowing how to speak English.
Kunis, who doesn’t use social media, hasn’t commented on the current situation.
Elton John shared a message on Sunday in support of “the people of Ukraine who do not deserve to live through this nightmare.”
Other celebrities who have raised money for the situation include entrepreneur and reality star Bethenny Frankel’s charity, BStrong, which has raised $3 million to relocate and support Ukrainian refugees as of Sunday, according to the charity’s website.
I hope this devastating situation gets even more attention and support so the people of Ukraine can get the help they need.
