Like any other expectant mom Lisseth Hernandez was both busy and tired.
The Massachusetts mom was feeling the stress caring for a toddler while heavily pregnant with twins.
But when she came down with a fever and headache, she feared the worst and was rushed to hospital where it was confirmed she had coronavirus.
She was placed in a medically induced coma and her babies were delivered via emergency c-section 10 weeks early.
As Lisseth battled the virus she had no idea she had given birth to her twins and when she woke up, three days after she was intubated, she was met with a picture of her beautiful babies and it gave her the strength to keep fighting so she could meet them.
“They put a picture in the room and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I had my twins already and I didn’t know,’” she said, as per CBS Local Boston.
Low on ventilators
But the virus dealt another blow to Lisseth and her family; the hospital where she was being treated was on low on NICU ventilators at the time because of the extraordinarily large number of COVID-19 patients.
Her twins had to be transported to the nearby NICU at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
But 14 days after she gave birth to Sebastien Isael and Milagros Aurora, Milagros, meaning miracle, she was strong enough to leave her hospital bed and meet her two bundles of joy.
“Me as a mom, I felt their little hands, their little feet. I don’t have words to explain that,” Lisseth said.
Doctors hope the twins will be able to go home in four to six weeks.
Medical staff have always been heroes but now more than ever they are performing miracles while putting their own lives at risk.
