Married couples who stay together through the decades seem to get rarer by the day. The question these couples who have been married 50, 60 years always get asked is what their secret is and the answers alway vary.
I remember one couple saying “never go to bed without resolving an argument”, which has stuck with me. Then trust and communication seems to be very sound advice for newlyweds.
But one North Carolina couple deserves all our admiration for making it to their 82nd wedding anniversary. The couple also marked their 103rd and 100th birthdays within seven days of each other.
And their secret to a long and happy marriage is pretty straightforward.
D.W. Williams, 103, and Willie Williams, 100, enjoyed a well-deserved party at a north Charlotte church where they celebrated their wedding anniversary and birthdays by singing hymns with their friends and family.
“To see them at this age and still doing well, it’s just a blessing to have them here,” granddaughter BJ Williams-Greene said, according to Boston 25 News.
The couple aren’t far behind making it into the record books for the oldest living spouses by aggregate age. A record currently held by 100-year-old Miyako and her husband, Masao Matsumoto, 108, from Japan.
The Japanese couple credit their successful marriage to her patience.
However D.W. and Willie said they have no secret to their success, “just be nice to each other,” Willie Williams said.
They said they have lived through wars, the Depression and the civil rights era, Boston 25 News reported.
That is the kind of news I like to hear. Congratulations to the couple and God bless 🙂
What an achievement for this sweet couple – clearly kindness is the key to a long and happy life.
