Not everyone who shares our blood is family.
Rainwater Blackfoot was abandoned by both her parents at a young age. She was forced to grow up in care and had to fend for herself her whole life. Her father even told her he was “happier without her.”
The loss and pain caused to her by her parent’s cruel abandonment made it impossible for her to trust other people, and it was a pain that she had to live with every day of her life.
But little did she know that her father had left her a gift when he passed away – and it was a gift that had the ability to turn her life around for the better.
Rainwater Blackfoot hasn’t had the easiest of lives. She was abandoned by her mother when she was just a baby, and her father put her in foster care when she was young.
“He told me he was having a happier life without me,” Rainwater tells Inside Edition.
Rainwater struggled for years to make it on her own. “There were many years where there was no food in the house,” Rainwater tells Inside Edition. “I didn’t have electricity for months.”
But the scars run even deeper than that. Being abandoned by both of the people who were meant to care about her the most has made it impossible for Rainwater to trust people.
“If someone tries to help me out, there is usually a catch to it,” she says.
Unexpected gift
In 2008, Rainwater’s father passed away. He left her USD $86,000, but Rainwater had no idea.
It wasn’t until 2015 that the We Find, You Keep campaign uncovered the sum, that was being held by the New York State controller. Together with Inside Edition, they planned to give Rainwater the surprise of her life!
“I could never have imagined in a million years that all this money would be sitting for me,” Rainwater exclaims when she opens the surprise gift left to her by her father.
“It doesn’t matter where you come from or where you started, sometimes the ending is beautiful,” she tells Inside Edition.
