Having a baby is challenging enough but amid the current global pandemic it’s even more of a concern.
For one young mom from Vancouver, Washington, she found herself facing a terrifying future after being diagnosed with COVID-19 well into her pregnancy.
When Angela Primachenko was 34 weeks pregnant she was put in a medically induced coma, just days after testing positive for the virus.
Medical staff spent hours discussing the best way to handle her pregnancy and decided they should induce her to give her lungs more space and her body more nutrients, according to her twin sister Oksana Luiten.
Angela, who works as a respiratory therapist, was admitted onto the ICU unit of the hospital that employs her on March 26 and three days later put on a ventilator – the one that she had used on many patients herself.
The 27-year-old mom gave birth to a healthy baby girl Ava on April 1 while in a coma. Four days later Angela’s condition deteriorated.
“When you’re that sick, you’re just fighting for your life,” Angela said, as per KCRA 3 News. “My focus wasn’t on fear; it was just on getting through it.”
Thankfully she fought the virus and woke up to discover she had a 5-day old baby girl but doctors told her she wasn’t allowed to hold her baby until she had tested negative for the virus.
‘Crying right now’
Angela tested negative for the virus this week and was allowed to hold her baby girl for the first time; she broke into tears when her daughter was placed in her arms.
“Crying right now,” Angela posted on Instagram. “Our little sunshine is doing amazing!”
Now the family are looking forward to Ava coming home this weekend.
