Most young people dream big and 22-year-old David Denz was no exception.
He was an outgoing and talented young artist with a big imagination.
Unfortunately, he would never get the chance to pursue his dream.
In April 2017, the 22-year-old hugged his mom Nancy goodbye and headed to work.
But just one hour later, Nancy learned her oldest son was in a terrible car accident. Life changed in a confusing and gut-wrenching second.
All Nancy knew was that Daniel somehow lost control of the car before it rolled over the embankment and crashed into a ravine.
Nancy says, witnesses clambered over bushes and through the ravine to try to save him. But it was too late, Daniel had quickly passed away.
The details of the car crash were few and the police were confused when they arrived.
The cause of the accident was initially unclear to investigators, but a stranger noticed an open cell phone lying on the freeway.
It was Daniel’s phone, and the discovery they made right there on the screen helped piece together the young man’s final moments.
Daniel had been texting while driving.
”The reason we know he was texting is that a witness picked up his phone off the freeway. And it was open, and he was in the middle of sending a message,” Nanny said.
Now, Nancy has a urgent warning for anyone willing to listen. She’s hoping her son’s tragic story will help save lives.“To see that dream disappear, to plan a funeral, when I should have been planning a grad party, it’s devastating,” Denz said. “I don’t want other parents to go through it.”
