The strong bond Princess Diana had with her two boys is evident in these vintage shots shared on her birthday

Regarded as the ‘People’s Princess’ for her warmth and down-to-earth manner, Princess Diana worked tirelessly to help others.

She captured the hearts, not just of the British public, but of people around the world.

Her sudden death in August 1997 left a world in mourning and two young boys without a mother.

Millions will never forget how Charles and Diana’s sons Prince William, then aged 15 and 12-year-old Prince Harry walked bravely in her funeral procession.

Her number one priority in life were her boys and so on the day that she would be marking her 58th birthday we look back at those happy moments they shared together.

Princess Diana married Prince Charles when she was just 20 years old. Their wedding was watched by more than 750 million people around the world.

She devoted much of her married life to helping others through many non-profits such as Landmine Survivors Network. Most of us remember the famous image of her walking across a minefield in a campaign which aimed to stop the use of landmines.

She also worked with the Royal School for the Blind and also worked hard to raise awareness of HIV and Aids.

While much of her time was spent helping others, her two boys took priority in her life above all else.

In a one-off documentary released in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death the princes recalled what a fun and loving mother she was.

According to an article on the documentary in the Telegraph newspaper, Prince Harry recalled how his mother would smuggle candy into their socks as a treat for after their soccer games.

Prince Harry said: “One of her mottos to me was: ‘you can be as naughty as you want, just don’t get caught’”.

To mark what would have been Princess Diana’s 58th birthday, we’ve put together a few of the many beautiful moments captured of her with her two sons.

Her two boys have families of their own now and in the 2017 documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy,” William said he is “constantly talking about Granny Diana” with his and Kate Middleton’s own children.

William wants his children to know all about his beloved mother and has pictures of her around the house to remind them of her.

In the documentary Harry recalls with warmth the tight hugs his mom gave him.

‘I miss having that mother’

“She would just engulf you and squeeze you as tight as possible,” he said in the documentary.

“Even talking about it now I can feel the hugs that she used to give us and I miss that. I miss that feeling, I miss that part of a family, I miss having that mother to be able to give you those hugs and give you that compassion that I think everybody needs.”

This August will mark the 22nd anniversary of the death of Diana, who died in a car crash when she was 36 years old.

‘Nightmare grandmother’

Prince William said she would have loved his children “to bits” joking that she would have been a “nightmare grandmother.”

He added, “She’d come and go and she’d come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing  scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place, and then leave.”

On Prince William’s first day at school he apparently announced that he didn’t like photographers or “Don’t like ‘tographers,”  as the princes’ former bodyguard Ken Wharfe revealed in an interview.

In the documentary Harry described Diana as “the best mum in the world” who “smothered us with love.”

Fun and protective mom

The special bond she had with her boys was evident throughout her short life. It was clear she was a fun and protective mom who made sure that her boys knew how much they were loved.
