According to hearingloss.org, “Hearing loss has been shown to negatively impact nearly every dimension of the human experience including: physical health, emotional and mental health, perceptions of mental acuity, social skills, family relationships and self-esteem, not to mention work and school.”
In short, hearing loss can have a huge effect on a person’s life, especially if the person affected is a child.
For a child impacted by hearing loss, they will not experience the world in the same way as hearing children. Of course — they don’t have one of their vital senses, and it can put a child at a disadvantage when it comes to the proper development of speech, language, and social skills.
It is estimated that 2-3 children out of every 1,000 are born with hearing issues and face the negative effects. But, there is technology to help these children.
Two-year-old Caleb was born deaf and it is not clear if there was any cause, other than a simple congenital defect. With the help of doctors, little Caleb is finally able to hear.
A viral reaction
Imagine for a moment that since the moment you came into this world, everything was silent. All of the noise and hum that we are so accustomed to in daily life has never been there.
Around you, people talk and communicate, but you can’t hear them. Other kids enjoy cartoons of colorful characters singing and dancing, but you can’t hear them. Your mother would love to soothe you to sleep with a soft lullaby, but you wouldn’t be able to hear her. She tells you “I love you” a thousand times per day, and still, you can’t hear those beautiful words.
Caleb can finally hear, and the world around him feels more complete. As he begins to experience sound for the first time, something that so many of us take for granted, he is absolutely delighted. His complete happiness is infectious and his mother is so pleased for her little boy.
