We all know that beer, wine and soda aren’t as healthy as water.
Still, many people prefer soda to water… In fact, the average American drinks 143 liters of sugary soda per year. That’s quite a lot!
So what would happen in your body if you switched all those sugary drinks to water? Quite a lot, it turns out.
1. Your metabolism will increase
If you drink a glass of water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, your metabolism will increase by 30 percent for the next hour.
Not bad, right? A 30 percent increase corresponds to approximately 25 calories, according to the researchers who did the study.
If you want to spice things up, add a lemon to the glass of water — it will add a little variety to your routine and help with digestion.
2. You’ll live longer
A glass of water a day can help you live longer, according to new research from Lund University in Sweden. This is because an extra glass of water every day is thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure and type 2 diabetes.
3. Your kidneys will work better
Problem with kidney stones? Water can help. Some research shows that drinking more water can help prevent recurring problems in people who have previously had kidney stones.
4. Your brain will function better
The brain consists of about 85 percent water, so “feeding” it with liquid is recommended.
And because water is one of the fuels of the body’s engine, it can help increase concentration.
Other studies of subjects ranging from children to the elderly have shown that only a little dehydration can worsen your mood, memory and cognitive function.
5. You’ll feel energized
Water is the best thing you can drink to fend off dehydration. Losing as little as 2 percent of the body’s water content can impair physical performance, studies show.
If you reflect on the fact that athletes lose up to 6–10 percent of their water content through perspiration, you can see how important it is to fill up with water!
6. You’ll lose weight more easily
Drinking a lot of water can also help you lose weight.
That’s because water can make you feel full and boost the metabolism.
You might not be able to drink yourself slim with water — but it’s a great way to get started!
7. Bonus: You’ll save money!
Buying soft drinks, mineral water, beer, wine and juice is much more expensive than turning on the tap and pouring yourself a glass of water at home. Chances are, the water at your house is perfectly safe to drink. If you’re not sure, contact your local government.
