With so many terrifying headlines dominating our news feeds right now, an announcement from journalist and broadcaster Anderson Cooper couldn’t have come at a better time.
The 52-year-old shared the heartwarming news that he has become a dad for the first time and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, including from the usual stoic reporter himself.
Stopping to hold back the tears, Anderson Cooper announced on CNN, where he has worked since 2001, the surprise news that he is now a father.
“On Monday I became a father, I’ve never said that before out loud and it still actually astonishes me,” he said.
As a picture of the adorable 3-day old baby appears on the broadcast, Cooper said: “That’s Wyatt Morgan Cooper my son,” taking a moment to stop and smile while he held back the tears.
“He was 7.2 lbs at birth and he is sweet and soft and healthy, and I am beyond happy.”
Fighting back the tears Cooper continued: “I do wish my mom and my dad, and my brother Carter were alive to meet Wyatt, but I do believe they can see him.
“I imagine them all together, arms around each other smiling and laughing and watching looking down on us, happy to know that their love is alive in me and in Wyatt and that our family continues.”
Cooper originally announced the news on his Instagram page alongside a beautiful image of the adorable baby.
He wrote: “As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth.
“Most of all, I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, and watched over him lovingly, and tenderly, and gave birth to him. It is an extraordinary blessing – what she, and all surrogates give to families who can’t have children.”
Celebrities came out to congratulate Cooper including fellow CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, who has just recovered from COVID-19 with his wife, and sent him a message via video link.
“I’m just so happy for you, he could not be more lucky he’s got one of the smartest most deeply caring people as his father that I’ve ever met in my life, you’re going to be a great dad,” he said.
“This is going to be the best thing that ever happened in your life and his too.”
