Royal fans have been given plenty to consume in the last number of days. Harry and Meghan released the final three episodes of their Netflix documentary, revealing many new things concerning the royals and what royal life can be like.
It’s no understatement to say that Harry and Meghan want nothing to do with that life again. In fact, they’re now taking aim at the monarchy and all they had to endure.
For Meghan, her time as a royal almost cost her her life. In 2020, the former actress suffered a miscarriage. That, together with her deteriorating mental health, almost forced her to the brink. Where leaving the Royal Family is concerned, it could even be said that’s what saved Meghan.
Today, Harry and Meghan are openly talking about the miscarriage they endured as a couple. The prince recently went as far as to blame the media for it happening in the first place …
The first three episodes of Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary series explore their childhood years. Moreover, the couple gives insight into the early days of their relationship and even a sneak peek at the messages the two sent each other during that initial phase.
Harry & Meghan’s documentary series
The episodes include new intimate interviews and never-before-seen footage of the Sussexes. Prince Harry told the story of how the couple met in full, revealing that Meghan first caught his eye on Instagram when she appeared in a mutual friend’s video.
At the time, Meghan was wearing a filter that gave her dog ears. It was apparently enough to peak Harry’s interest.
“I was like, who is that?” Harry said in the documentary.
After that, one of their mutual friends introduced Meghan to Harry – and the rest, as they say, is history.
Harry was over the moon when he started dating Meghan. A friend who appeared in the documentary explained how happy and excited the prince was.
“Guys, I met a girl,” the friend recalled Harry saying. “We just met, but I think she’s the one.”
“We’d talk for hours.”
Meghan, meanwhile, explained how she and Harry shared a special connection from the beginning. Even though their relationship was long-distance in the beginning – and a secret to the world – it never stopped them.
“Everything was text and FaceTime, we’d talk for hours. It felt exciting but not in the way people would assume it would be,” Meghan said. “It was just relaxed and easy.”
The couple managed to battle through their long-distance relationship. They married in 2018, before leaving the Royal Family around two years later.
Meghan has previously spoken out about the treatment she received from the royals. In the documentary, she reveals new details, including her initial reception in the UK.
Some media coverage was flat-out racist, though Meghan also received public adoration.
Harry knew the press would judge his partner down to her finest detail. He explained in the documentary that he didn’t know if he would ever find a love interest “capable” and “willing” to go through with it to live a royal life.
“Every relationship I had within a matter of weeks or months was splattered all over the newspapers, and that person’s family harassed, and their lives turned upside down,” Harry said.
“After one or two girlfriends, the third or fourth girlfriend would say, ‘Hand on a second. I don’t know if I want this.”
Meghan’s tough start in the UK
When Meghan came to the UK, she felt the Royal Family wasn’t altogether welcoming. Of course, certain senior royals would argue the opposite, but if we’re to believe what Harry and Meghan claim in their documentary, the Firm family members didn’t seem to care too much at the time.
At the beginning of the documentary, a statement reads: “Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series.” Meanwhile, an unnamed source within the Palace has, on the other hand, claimed that the Netflix producers never even tried to contact the royals to get a comment.
As mentioned, Meghan had a tough time after becoming a part of the Royal Family. Upon meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton for the first time, the former actress realized she was heading into unknown territory.
Though Meghan and Kate reportedly got along pretty well initially, their relationship today is not what it once was.
When she met Kate for the first time, she was taken by surprise. Meghan, Harry, William, and Kate are said to have met for a couples’ dinner. Yet even though it was an intimate gathering, Kate showed less outward affection than Meghan would’ve liked.
Though Harry and Meghan revealed many things in the first episodes of their Netflix documentary series, more was to come as the final three parts aired Thursday.
The fourth, fifth, and sixth episodes covered the couple’s challenges since their wedding in 2018. It includes Meghan speaking out on her deteriorating mental health and the tragic moment she suffered a miscarriage.
Meghan Markle suffered a miscarriage
In November 2020, Meghan wrote an opinion piece for the New York Times, where she spoke more about her miscarriage and the pain she and Harry felt.
“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few. In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage. Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning,” Meghan wrote.
“Some have bravely shared their stories; they have opened the door, knowing that when one person speaks truth, it gives license for all of us to do the same. We have learned that when people ask how any of us are doing, and when they really listen to the answer, with an open heart and mind, the load of grief often becomes lighter — for all of us. In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing.”
Despite the pain and sorrow Harry and Meghan felt, the couple would welcome another child, a daughter, Lilibet, in 2021. Their son, Archie, was born in 2019.
In the sixth and final episode of their documentary series released Thursday, Meghan spoke on her miscarriage, which became very public.
At the time, she was very stressed as the couple moved into their new home.
Harry blames the media for Meghan’s miscarriage
Not only that, but Meghan had issues with her father, Thomas, and the relentless media coverage surrounding them.
“I was pregnant. I really wasn’t sleeping. The first morning that we woke up in our new home is when I miscarried,” Meghan said.
“I believe my wife suffered a miscarriage because of what the Mail did,” Harry added, referring to the newspaper.
In 2018, just months following the wedding, Meghan Markle sent her father a five-page letter. She reportedly begged him not to talk to the press. Then, not long after the letter was leaked, the Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), publisher of the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline, published parts of it, which left Meghan furious.
She decided to sue the ANL because of the publication – and won.
In court, Meghan’s lawyers said that the publication of the “intrinsically private, personal and sensitive” letter was “unlawful” and “a triple-barrelled invasion of her privacy rights,” according to the Mirror.
The last line of the letter read: “I ask for nothing other than peace and I wish the same for you.”
Associated Newspapers Limited had to pay Meghan a previously agreed-upon confidential sum related to the copyright infringement claim.
“I watched the whole thing”
According to the court order, the publisher also paid her £1 in nominal damages for the misuse of private information.
“I watched the whole thing,” Harry said: “Now, do we absolutely know the miscarriage was created, caused by that? Course we don’t. But bearing in mind the stress that that caused, the lack of sleep, and the timing of the pregnancy, how many weeks in she was, I can say, from what I saw, that miscarriage was created by what they were trying to do to her.”
In February 2021, the Palace confirmed that Meghan and Harry would be stepping down as working members of the Royal Family. Their last royal engagement was the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey.
In the fifth episode of the couple’s explosive Netflix documentary, they recalled the service. All Royal Family members were in attendance, including the late Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.
Their arrival at the event marked the first time Harry and Meghan had seen certain family members since they announced they were leaving. In the documentary series, Harry reflected on the engagement, saying that the reception he and Meghan got from his family wasn’t good at all.
“It was really sad”
“We were nervous seeing the family because all the TV cameras and everybody watching at home and everybody watching in the audience, it’s like living through a soap opera, where everybody else views you as entertainment,” Harry recalled.
“I felt really distant from the rest of my family which was interesting because so much of how they operate is about what it looks like rather than what it feels like. And it looked cold, but it also felt cold.”
Moreover, Harry described that the “farewell week” of royal duties was “bittersweet” and “sad.”
“As sad as it is, in order for change to happen a lot of pain has to come to the surface. In order for us to move to the next chapter, you have to finish the first chapter,” he said, continuing to describe how they looked through old photos before moving.
“We always saw Archie running around the garden at Frogmore Cottage and maybe jumping in the Queen’s pond. That was all part of our future, and everything changed really really quickly,” Harry recalled.
“We knew we were going to get some breathing space from this very painful experience that we’d been stuck in but also at the same time, it was really sad.”
