Laura Bush’s beloved mother died aged 99.
Jenna Hawkins Welch passed away two days before Mother’s Day after a “long and wonderful” life, her family said on Sunday.
Laura Bush‘s mother, Jenna Hawkins Welch, died Friday, two days before Mother’s Day. She died at 99, one year before her 100th anniversary.
A heartbroken Laura announced her mom’s passing via an emotional post on Instagram. The former First lady shared a photo of her dear mom alongside a touching tribute.
Her mother, Laura wrote, was “a true daughter of West Texas who loved her family, books, and nature. My memories of reading with her and stargazing under the Midland sky are reminders of the passions that she nurtured in me.”
Jenna Bush Hager also commemorated her late grandma with a powerful tribute.
“She read us poetry and taught us about every constellation in the sky. Her kindness and graciousness were as expansive as the West Texas horizon,” wrote Hager.
Welch’s obituary sketches the many decades of her life:
She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in July 1919, and grew up during the Great Depression in Canutillo, Texas.
As a young adult, she spent two years at what was then the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy followed by a job at a local advertising company where she met her husband, Harold Welch.
Family lore has it that she looked down from a second floor office window just as he looked up from the street below.
After Harold spent two years overseas in Europe fighting in World War Two, the couple moved to Midland, where their only daughter was born.
Jenna Hawkins loved school and reading, a passion she would later nurture in her daughter, Laura, the obituary states.
The Bush family has suffered a lot of heartbreaks in the last year. Not long ago, Laura’s husband George W. Bush lost both his parents.
His mother Barbara passed away in April 2018 at 92.
His father, the former US President George H. W. Bush, joined his wife in the heaven in November. He was 94.
