Chef makes a bacon cake with just 5 ingredients – how-to video watched by millions

There’s a few ingredients in this world that are guaranteed to be a winner whatever they’re put in, the latest trend is putting bacon with chocolate – a surprisingly winning combination.

Traditionally bacon is usually taken to a new taste sensation when it’s paired with potatoes or cheese but in this viral video well-known American-born Canadian chef Michael Smith creates a bacon, potato and cheddar tart with just 5 main ingredients.

His how-to video making this tasty tart has already been watched by over 6 million people. Here’s how to create this mouthwatering delight which is guaranteed to provide the greatest comfort during these lock-down times.

Ingredients

Here’s how to make this tantalizing tart which really is in a league of its own.

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and carefully arrange the bacon in a radial pattern from the center of the bottom of a 10 or 12-inch (25 or 30 cm) round non-stick baking pan.

Let the ends hang over. The slices should overlap slightly around the sides of the pan.

YouTube

Using the palm of your hand, flatten the center area, leaving no gaps in the bacon. Season the bacon with lots of pepper and then sprinkle on several spoons of shredded cheddar.

YouTube

Slice the uncooked potatoes as thinly as you can, about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick. Arrange them in a circular pattern of overlapping slices around the bottom of the pan. Continue until the bacon base is evenly covered and season with salt and pepper.

YouTube

Then mix together the onion and garlic and sprinkle some of the mixture onto the potatoes.

YouTube

Cover with a layer of the grated cheese.

YouTube

Continue with a layer of the shredded cheese and a layer of potatoes, pressing each layer firmly down before continuing with the next layer. Do this until the layers are 1 inch (2.5 cm) higher than the rim of the pan.

YouTube

Now to the magic of the whole recipe – lift up the slices, and fold them over the cake to cover the cheese and potato mountain.

YouTube

Cover the top with a round of parchment paper and a saucepan lid to stop the bacon ends from shrinking as they cook.

Place the pan on a baking sheet and bake for at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Test if it’s done by pricking it with a knife. If the blade goes in easily and through the potatoes it’s ready.

YouTube

Pour off as much fat as possible. Let it stand for 15 minutes then transfer to a cutting board. Slice into wedges and serve it immediately.
