When Paul Camps, from Gloucester, England decided to take the trip of a lifetime to The Grand Canyon National Park, in Arizona, he wasn’t quite ready for the blistering heat.
But what shocked him even more was the behavior of a local squirrel who clearly saw Paul as his savior from the desert heat and started following the tourist and his girlfriend.
Paul was taking in the amazing scenery of this top tourist attraction, where temperatures can get as high as 87F during the summer, when he noticed the squirrel acting strangely.
“The squirrel began to follow me and put its arms up to me like it wanted picking up,” he said.
“I passed my water bottle to my girlfriend so I could take a picture on my phone – and as I did, the squirrel began to put its arms up towards my girlfriend.”
The couple understood immediately that the clever squirrel was thirsty and desperately needed a drink.
Paul, although shocked by the animal’s behavior, was jolted into action by the needy critter and held out the open bottle. The squirrel drank the whole lot.
“Needless to say we didn’t drink from the same bottle,” Paul joked.
The Grand Canyon National Park Service advises that visitors stay a safe distance from wildlife – in the case of squirrels, about 50ft away. And there is always the danger that if you get too close, you may get scratched or bitten.
