Millions of Americans were in high spirits this week, rejoicing over the fourth of July and the day the country claimed its independence. During the excitement, Michelle Booker-Hicks stopped with her children at a Dallas gas station to refuel.
In her car were her two sons, one two-years-old, the other four. Yet, though it was a time of national celebration, a seemingly trivial stop would soon take an entirely different turn… a quite terrifying and eventful one indeed.
It was 10pm when Michelle Booker-Hicks pulled her car, carrying her two young children, into a Dallas gas station. She went about her business as usual, before heading inside the store to pay for her fuel. That’s when she saw a stranger, 36-year-old Ricky Wright, jump into the driver’s seat of her vehicle.
When Michelle realized what was happening, she rushed from the store and leapt into the backseat of her car alongside her children, Fox4 says.
Shoots intruder in the face
“I proceeded to jump in my backseat and told the gentleman to stop, to get out the car. He would not get out of the car. He turned around and looked at me,” Michelle said.
“I reached over the armrest to get my glove compartment and that’s when I fired at him once I got the gun from my glove compartment.”
Michelle claims that she pulled the trigger once, with the intention of firing a warning shot to scare Wright off. Instead, she shot him in the face.
“I’m not a killer but I do believe in defending what’s mine,” the mom of two said. “I hope that woke him up.”
After being shot, Wright crashed into the fence of a nearby McDonald’s restaurant adjacent to the gas station. He managed to get out of the car, but promptly collapsed and was then arrested by police, before being taken to hospital for treatment.
The 36-year-old is expected to face charges including kidnapping and the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle or carjacking.
Fortunately, Michelle and her children escaped the incident with no injuries.
