I know that my mom, like all moms of twins, found it incredibly hard looking after two babies at the same time, but growing up as a twin is a fantastic experience.
When Sarah and Bill Thistlethwaite found out they were expecting twins back in 2014, they were of course overjoyed.
But the joy soon became mixed with concern when the doctors discovered that the babies were monoamniotic twins, which means they shared an amniotic sac — instead of each having her own — during gestation.
The pregnancy carried greater risks but despite Sarah, a math teacher from Orrville, Ohio, spending 57 days on bed rest before having them via cesarean, the twins had few medical issues.
Sarah and Bill already had a son so were so excited to have two girls in their lives. Just a few days before Mother’s Day 2014, it was finally time for the girls to be delivered.
They were delivered at 33 weeks and the two sweet girls were healthy, but, just seconds after the delivery, the hospital room went dead quiet and Sarah’s OBGYN, Melissa Mancuso, let out a gasp.
Nobody could believe it when they saw the girls were holding hands.
“My heart just melted,” Sarah told People magazine.
“Even my husband got tears in his eyes – I don t know that anybody in the room had a dry eye.”
Unsurprinslgy, the photo of the precious twins went viral.
The twins, who shared an amniotic sac and placenta, had to stay at the hospital’s NICU to get stronger and grow. They got home just in time for Father’s Day in 2014.
“We were so excited and kept thanking God we made it to that point,” Sarah told AP back then and continued:
“Having them here is amazing, but having them here so healthy when they were premature, it’s absolutely phenomenal.”
As they grew up, the two lively little girls developed their own personalities. Jillian was the daredevil, while Jenna was more cautious.
The set of rare “mono mono” twins born on May 9 in 2014, has now turned seven years old, and their bond is still powerful.
”Jenna is our more shy and quiet one,” Sarah Thistlethwaite told News 5 Cleveland in 20121. “Jillian is our more sassy one.”
Sarah, who described her girls as “two peas in a pod” in 2014, said that they cry if one is without the other. Even today, the girls hold hands often and love to be around each other
If you look at them today, you just smile. It seems like they are healthy and enjoying their childhood. Their mother still posts pictures of the family on Facebook, giving us a little insight into the family’s everyday life.
And speaking about that famous photo from 2014, Sarah remembers it with a warm feeling in her heart.
“It still gives me goosebumps when I look back at that picture,” Sarah Thistlethwaite says. “It was one of those moments that you’ll never forget and I look back at that picture even now and I can’t believe it happened.”
Apparently, both Jenna and Jillian know about the picture as well.
They can Google. On YouTube, they look up Thistlethwaite twins and they see each other and watch all the old videos and they think that’s really cool,” Sarah Thistlethwaite said.
