For those who have lived in an older house, it’s always a wonder whether we’ll find some hidden treasure in the attic or basement.
Rarely do I ever hear of this happening but it’s a nice dream.
For one couple this dream became a reality.
The anonymous couple took a series of photos of their exciting find and posted them on Imgur under the name of “branik12”,
“So my family and I have been living in our house we bought some years back,” Imgur user “branik12” wrote. “The house was built in the late 40’s.”
The couple had already remodeled the first and second floors, now it was time to do the basement.
As the self-described DIY aficionado removed the basement ceiling, thick layers of dust that had built up over the years emerged.
“We put up plastic to keep the dust out of the rest of the house and exposed then patched the air returns first,” he explained
As he cleared away the dust he noticed a green vintage lunchbox wedged in the ceiling.
He brought the box outside in the sun and shouted for his wife to come and see his findings
The box felt like their was something inside, it wasn’t heavy but they wondered if it was full of old newspapers or magazines or perhaps sports cards?
The lucky couple discovered several packages wrapped in wax paper.
A March 25 Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper inside the suitcase suggests that it was hidden in 1951.
The couple couldn’t believe someone had wrapped cash in paper and hidden it in a lunchbox! They couldn’t wait to open it and take a closer look.
They opened the first bundle and found nothing but twenty dollar bills.
“We are freaking out at this point,” he writes. “This doesn’t happen to us! What do we do? Where are the cameras?”

“The second package didn’t have any twenties. It was all fifties! What is going on here? There could be 5 grand here!.
“Wait!!!! The third package is 100s!!!! This is out of control!!!”
He said: “Some of the bills were rarer than others. Some brown notes, a gold certificate and some star notes nearly uncirculated. All bills were from 1928-1934.”
What is it worth?
“Next was hours of inventory and googling. I decided that we needed to have the special bills appraised and talk to a lawyer about how to proceed. Once the legal stuff was taken care of I decided to continue with the plan to post to Imgur.”
At the time, the couple had been trying hard to pay off their mortgage, so this was a huge help.
One week later, life had returned to normal (all things considered) and the homeowner returned to his basement remodel.
But this didn’t go according to plan either as he found a second box, twice as heavy as the first!
“My wife was at work when I found this one, so I have to wait for her to get home to open it.”
He excitedly recorded the bonus find and said: “The second package didn’t have any twenties. It was all fifties! What is going on here? There could be 5 grand here!. Wait!!!! The third package is 100s!!!! This is out of control!!!”
The total came to roughly $45,000 and was deposited into a bank account ready to help pay off their mortgage.
What a lucky couple and to think this homeowner doesn’t believe in karma!
