When KisLevonia Givens found out she was pregnant she was surprised, especially as she already had four children, then her doctor told her she was having twins – a boy and a girl.
She was thrilled and couldn’t wait to have the ultrasound and see her two babies growing. But at 13 weeks pregnant it was determined that her baby girl, she called Patience, had “vanished”.
Doctors described what had happened as “vanishing twin syndrome” where the fetus absorbs into their mother’s or sibling’s body.
KisLevonia was heartbroken but when her baby boy was born she couldn’t believe it when she saw a birthmark on his knee and it reminded her of Patience’s ultrasound image.
“When I’d given birth, one of the nurses came in and pointed out his birthmark to me,” the Louisiana mom said, according to the Daily Mail.
“It shocked me but I was happy and smiling. It was amazing. It’s incredible what the human body is capable of doing.
“The birthmark looks like the scan of his sibling at 10 weeks. That’ll always be a reminder for Payelon of his twin that didn’t make it.”
The 28-year-old mom from Shreveport didn’t realize she was having twins until she was nine weeks pregnant and saw the two babies on an ultrasound image.
But she also learned that Payelon’s sister was much smaller than her brother and struggling to thrive.
She went into labor three weeks early with Payelon and it was a concern as the surviving twin can be at risk of conditions such as cerebral palsy and hypertension.
Now she says her boy is growing faster than most babies his age and the birthmark on his knee is a reminder of the sister he never met – sweet Patience.
