The time Clint Eastwood became mayor of a Californian seaside city

At 91 years old, Clint Eastwood has done it all: acting, directing, producing, and even performing as a jazz musician.

But do you remember when he turned to politics and served as the mayor of Carmel, California?

The five-time Oscar-winner moved to the seaside city of Carmel in the 70s where he bought property and even opened a few businesses including an English-style pub.

But life wasn’t all that easy for Eastwood during his time there as he clashed with the council a number of times over a building project which led him to want to take on the council and help change the way the city was run.

Eastwood confirmed he was running for mayor just hours before the deadline and won by a landslide claiming more than 70 percent of the votes.

After his election Eastwood was asked if he wanted to be called “Mr. Mayor” from now on; he responded, “Nah, it’s just Clint.” In his victory speech, he included his plans to make the town more business friendly.

“I would like to think that we can now take the community out of the hands of the few and put it in the hands of the many, the people of Carmel,” he said, according to Do You Remember.

During his time as mayor the father of eight made it possible for more restaurants to open making it more tourist friendly.

After two years as mayor Eastwood decided not to seek reelection in 1988 saying he wanted to step out of the public eye and spend more time with his family.
