They say true love is once in a lifetime and some are lucky enough to find it. This Ohio couple spent 79 years of marital bliss together and everyone who knew them knew they were made for each other.
And after the wife died, everyone in the family knew that he would follow soon after because he would “not let her go alone.” This is the story of Hubert and June Malicote.
Grieving daughter Jo Malicote revealed that her mother June Malicote’s health had been declining for a few years but her father Hubert Malicote had been fine.
It was when his beloved wife of 79 years recently started hospice care, that Hubert’s health also started to decline.
“He went from 100 to zero in the span of three days,” Jo said. “My dad saw what was happening to mom. He knew the prognosis and he wasn’t going to let her go alone. He lined up to be with her.”
Just one week earlier, Hubert had been riding his tractor and working in his wood shop. But his health deteriorated at such a fast pace, that he joined his wife June in hospice care soon after and nurses pushed their beds together to make sure the couple had one another in their final days on earth.
“When dad passed they were in hand in hand,” Jo recalls. A few hours later, his beloved wife June “slipped away to be with him.”

“It’s like she knew he was gone,” Jo, who is one of three children the couple had together said. She added, “We gave her permission to go be with Dad. We gathered in her room and said, ‘He’s waiting for you,’ and I know she heard us.”
Earlier this year, in the summer the couple made headlines everywhere because of their 100th birthday happening in the same year as their 79th anniversary. During that happier time, Hubert revealed the couple had met when they were 19 years old at church. Since then they had stayed by one another’s side, facing everything from wars to the great depression and more. The couple said in their 79 years of marriage, they had never had a fight!
“It’s kind of like if we aren’t together, the team is broken,” Hubert explained.
“They had a beautiful life. They were like a well-oiled machine, where everything just worked right,” Jo said about her loss. “Our loss is great, but we are taking comfort in knowing they gained eternity together.”
This couple was a rarity and it is heartbreaking to know that they have both passed. We are sending our condolences to the Malicote family and hope they are able to heal from this tremendous loss.
