Sound of Music star Julie Andrews meets real Maria von Trapp – gets shock response to her singing

The Sounds of Music was an instant success when it was released in 1965 and is a much-loved movie for the generations that have followed.

It was just one year after British actress Julie Andrews had won an Academy Award for her role as Mary Poppins when she appeared as  Austrian governess Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Her portrayal of Maria, looking after seven children who had just lost their mother, involves a scene where she is yodeling.

Despite winning a Golden Globe Award for her performance, Julie always wondered if her yodeling skills had impressed the film’s real-life inspiration. So, when she got the chance to meet Maria after the movie’s release, she asked her for an honest critique, but wasn’t quite ready for her response.

The actress was excited to have the opportunity to invite the real Maria on stage for her ABC variety show “The Julie Andrews Hour.”

Julie asks Maria if she did a good job playing her in the film. The very tall and stern-looking woman, who is wearing her native Austrian wear, delivers a response that Andrews wasn’t quite ready for.

The two are so entertaining together as Maria gently lets Julie know what she really thinks of her singing, but then decides to give the actress a yodeling lesson on the spot.

Check out the video below to see the two singing a surprise duet. For fans of the movie, it’s a must.
