Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth has been a regular on both the stage and screen for almost 30 years.
Now she’s written a book for children which explores adopting a dog, which prompted her to open up about her own adoption.
The 53-year-old Oklahoma-born star won a Tony Award for her performance as Sally Brown in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance of Glinda in the musical “Wicked.”
She got her big break while in New York helping her friend move. She’d been offered a scholarship to Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts after completing her master’s degree, but while in New York she auditioned for the musical “Animal Crackers” and got the role of Arabella Rittenhouse.
Kristin has since gone on to also have a successful TV career appearing in The West Wing and winning a Primetime Emmy Award for her role in the comedy drama Pushing Daisies. She’s even appeared in movies such as Bewitched and the Pink Panther.
Now she’s turned her talented hand to books and her new book “What Will I Do with My Love Today?” she discussed on the Today show, alongside revealing the beautiful story of her adoption saying she was “rescued.”
“My dad always says ‘Man, did we win the lottery’ and I always say ‘No, I won the lottery,'” she said.
Kristin, who was adopted by her parents Junie and Jerry at just five days old, shared how they talked about adoption when she was a child.
“It was never a surprise,” she said. “They always said ‘The lady that had you in her belly could not take care of you the way she wanted to, and she loved you so much.'”
She added, “This is what my mom said, ‘She gave you life, but we get to give you a life.'”
She also read an excerpt from her book which is about adopting a puppy, something Kristin says she has done which she credits with “saving her life.”
She read, “Extra love in your heart and your home is waiting for somebody who is all alone.”
“No matter how life has brought us together, adoption means family, and family is forever. We had lots of love in our family before, but with you Thunder pup, we have even more.”
Kristin, who was recently a singing advisor with Team Ariana on hit TV show The Voice last year, also hinted that she wouldn’t be against adopting herself.
Kristin got engaged to country music guitarist Josh Bryant in October 2021.
“Guess you’re stuck with me now, @joshbguitar. I love you and I’m never letting you go. A million times yes!!!” the Broadway star captioned an Instagram post announcing the happy news last fall.
The loving way she talks about adoption and how it should be viewed has surely helped countless other people come to terms with adoption. I hope she continues to talk about her own beautiful experience.
