Most of us who are lucky enough to have a loving family, take it for granted that we arrive in this world surrounded by love and the best care possible.
For some babies they find themselves alone in the world as soon as they arrive.
Premature baby Gisele weighed just over one pound when she was born in July 2016, she was also withdrawing from the drugs her mother had been taking.
When she was five months old and still recovering in hospital, a nurse was told she’d had no visitors. One look at little Gisele and nurse Liz Smith knew what she had to do.
Little Gisele had weighed 1 pound and 14 ounces at birth and was withdrawing from drugs she’d been exposed to while in the womb.
Gisele had complex medical needs, and after a while family members had stopped coming to visit.
She had been removed from her mother’s care and was in desperate need of a foster family. But in the 5 months she’d been at the hospital nobody had visited her.
Had dreams of becoming a mom
In the same hospital, Franciscan Children’s Hospital, in Boston, was a nurse called Liz Smith who had risen through the ranks to become Director of Nursing.
Her dreams of being a nurse had clearly been fulfilled but her dreams of becoming a mom was proving harder to achieve.
Liz was in her 40s and hadn’t met the right man so had tried to get pregnant alone but several rounds of IUI had failed.
Then she was introduced to Gisele and said she knew immediately that she wanted to take her home and look after her.
‘I needed to love this child’
“I had never considered fostering or adoption but a week later Gisele crossed my path in a stroller, we locked eyes and that was it,” she told CNN.
“Since the moment I met her, there was something behind her striking blue eyes capturing my attention,” she said. “I felt that I needed to love this child and keep her safe.” she said according to Boston.com.
The journey to adopt Gisele has not been easy for Liz but now the two are together and Liz is officially Gisele’s mom.
