Man desperately needs new kidney – then ex-wife steps forward with life-saving offer

Couples divorce for many different reasons, often it’s the simple fact that they have just grown apart and are no longer the same people they were when they met.

What’s always admirable is when couples accept this, divorce and still remain good friends, which can be so beneficial not just for them but for their children also.

Mary Zeigler and Bill Henrichs are a great example of a couple doing just this. The two met when they were 14 and married four years later and raised two children.

But after 24 years of marriage they decided to go their own separate ways.

What Bill didn’t realize is how much he would need his ex wife and when the time came to call on her, she went above and beyond what was expected.

Bill and Mary still talk regularly, even when Bill remarried a lady called Linda. “Linda came into the picture and I will say it for the rest of my life — I thank God for her coming into our life,” Mary told Inside Edition

Then Bill got sick and was told by doctors that he needed a new kidney. Mary was a universal donor, and she told FOX 9 that she didn’t even have to think about offering one of her kidneys to Bill.

“You know for me, it wasn’t even a decision,” Mary said. “You know it was kind of like him calling up and saying, ‘Can you come over and help us rake leaves.’ That’s how I think of it.”

Then in July they had the wonderful news that Mary was a donor match for Bill and the  operation could go ahead.

We are celebrating that Mary was approved to donate a kidney to Bill. We are so thankful for her willingness to donate and look forward to the transplant in October (if Mayo can schedule then)! God is good!!

“We are celebrating that Mary was approved to donate a kidney to Bill,” Bill’s second wife Linda Henrichs wrote on Facebook in July. “We are so thankful for her willingness to donate and look forward to the transplant in October (if Mayo can schedule then)! God is good!!”

Mary took her donor duties very seriously eating well and keeping herself hydrated. When she woke up from the operation the doctor confirmed she was able to pass on an “excellent kidney” to her ex-husband, she said.

After the operation, she said her recovery was “incredibly fast.”

Changing attitudes

She hopes their story can help inspire other divorced couples to think differently about their ex spouses.

“If this story changes one person’s actions or attitude towards their ex, it’ll be all worth it,” Mary said.

What a great example of how a blended family should behave. It’s so important that we love our fellow humans despite our differences.
