Making your child lunch every day to take to school is a great way of ensuring they get all the essential vitamins they need, and maybe a treat to brighten their day.
But there are so many children out there who don’t get lunch made for them and can’t afford a school lunch. While there are programs to help with those struggling financially it’s not always easy for parents to apply for this money or even know it’s available.
When Josettes Duran’s son came home one day and asked his mom if he could pack two lunches for him, she just presumed he was a growing hungry boy. The reason why has spread across the internet, warming the hearts of tens of thousands of people.
The generous mom from Albuquerque, New Mexico, just thought her son needed extra food so packed him a second lunch every day for a month.
One day she asked him if he wasn’t getting too full with all the food she was sending him to school with. She noted his reply in a video she posted on Facebook.
“Yes Mom, it’s for this boy. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch can you make him lunch too? I don’t think he has lunch money,” her son Dylan told her.
Apparently the 14-year-old had noticed that a boy at his school was sitting on his own every day and only bringing a fruit cup for lunch.
Josette then learned the heartbreaking truth about the mother of Dylan’s friend — and immediately related. “A few years ago, me and my son were homeless,” Josette says. “I was living in my car and I was washing him in bathrooms. And we didn’t have food.”
After a month of sending her son off to school every day with two lunches, the boy’s mother found out that she had been feeding her son and asked if she could meet her.
