Officer answers call to pregnant drug addict, months later she asks him to make a life-changing decision

The two women started talking about the challenges of motherhood and explains.

“I mentioned, ‘Oh, you are pregnant,’ and she said, ‘Oh yeah,’ and placed my hand on her womb,” Ashley said, according to CBS Francisco.

It was shortly after the Whittens received a call that left them with an important decision to make.

The birth mother specifically asked for Ashley and Jesse to adopt her child.

“It’s weird to live in the tension of joy and heartbreak like this story is,” Ashley said. “It’s wonderful at the same time.”

The Whittens, who already had three daughters at the time, answered the desperate woman’s plea and adopted her baby. Newborn Harlow Masie Whitten has settled in very well with her three new sisters, who were overjoyed to get a new baby sister.

“She smiles so beautifully,” said Jesse.

“Her smile is the best thing,” Ashley added.

Harlow was exposed to drugs in the womb but is doing much better now. Ashley and Jesse have seen the birth mother since adopting Harlow. The couple said it was an emotional meeting.

“We were talking and –– I was saying to her — ‘You made this choice for her and that we are so grateful,'” Ashley said. “And she said — ‘You’re her mother now.'”
