If you thought Hollywood’s favorite “Mr Nice Guy” Tom Hanks couldn’t get any more charming, then his latest role may just take your adoration to a whole new level.
Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks has secured the perfect role playing wholesome TV star Mr Rogers.
Fred McFeely Rogers was creator and host of preschool TV show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Over three decades he became a television icon of children’s entertainment and education.
Now Tom Hanks looks just like him as he channels the much-loved children’s TV host for a film about his life called A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
A picture from the set, shared by Sony on their Twitter page shows Tom Hanks recreating the moment when Rogers would take off his shoes while singing the theme song to his show, “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
Fred Rogers, who was a television personality, musician, puppeteer, writer, producer, and Presbyterian minister, wasn’t happy with children’s TV programs so started writing his own.
‘You’ve made this day a special day’
In 1968 his iconic children’s TV show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” first aired. It ran until 2001, two years before the TV star passed away at the age of 73.
Each show would end with Mr Rogers saying, “You’ve made this day a special day, by just your being you. There’s no person in the whole world like you; and I like you just the way you are.”
This latest movie follows in the footsteps of last year’s documentary about Rogers called “Won’t you be my Neighbor.”
The documentary was met with an an emotional response from viewers who were reminded how as children the show made them feel safe and allowed them to be their true selves.
Life changing time with Mr Rogers
This new look at Mr. Rogers’ life is based on an Esquire magazine profile about the iconic children’s entertainer and is due to be released in November.
As well as Tom Hanks, the movie also stars Matthew Rhys, who plays Esquire journalist Lloyd Vogel whose perspective on life is changed thanks to the time he spent with Mr. Rogers.
We were all touched by Mr Rogers and the impact he had on children’s lives. Tom Hanks seems to be the perfect choice to play him given the random acts of kindness that he performs in his day to day life.
