Businessman Willie Wilson gives away $200,000 worth of gas to Chicago residents

With gas prices still sky-high, many people are looking for ways to save at the pump.

But with the national average at $4.28 per gallon, there’s only so many things you can do to cut costs.

One man in Chicago wants to help his fellow neighbors out. Willie Wilson, a businessman and ex-mayoral candidate, announced he would be giving away $200,000 in gas on Thursday.

Gas station owners also agreed to lower their prices in order to give people more bang for one’s buck.

“The soaring price of gas has caused a hardship for too many of our citizens. The average price of regular gas has gone well over $4 a gallon for the first time in nearly 14 years and is now up nearly 50 percent from last year. The war in Ukraine, a ban on Russian oil, and high taxes are contributing to rising fuel prices,” Wilson said, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

The millionaire businessman said that beginning at 7 a.m. on Thursday ten Chicago gas stations would participate in his gas giveaway.

Each vehicle could purchase $50 worth of gas.

“As gas station owners we decided to lower our gasoline prices during Dr. Wilson’s gas giveaway in an effort to allow more cars to benefit from Dr. Wilson’s generosity,” Khalil Abdullah, a gas station owner said.

Vehicles began lining up several hours in advance with some people waiting in line since 2 a.m.

“I was like, ‘Is this for real?’ And then I seen it on the news, so I started trying to find out the locations, and I was like ‘oh, there’s one right here by the house five minutes away.’ Got right up, came right over here,” Ricky Kimmons, a carpenter, said.

King Kyle Lee, a rapper, has also offered to pay for gas for residents of San Antonio.

He said he wanted to give back to his community because things weren’t always great for him, and in his time of need people helped him out.

“In order to live here and be an artist, I had to sleep in my car. I was homeless,” Lee said. “There was people that helped me. There was people who opened up their home for me. There was some people who gave me some money.”

It’s heartbreaking to think of everyone who can’t afford gas, but need it in order to go about their daily lives.

I hope more people will find it in their hearts to do what they can and help out their neighbors.

Please share this to inspire others.
