The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery is a poignant reminder of all those who fought for us and lost their lives, particularly the many fallen who were never identified.
The Tomb is guarded by only the most elite and disciplined soldiers from the United States military, who carry out their duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, come rain or shine.
A recent mishap during the Changing of the Guards ceremony only added further proof that these soldiers are the very best that the Armed Forces have to offer.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb was erected in honor of unidentified fallen soldiers.
The tomb is considered by many to be a sacred site, and as such it is guarded by Tomb Sentinels 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions.
The job of Tomb Sentinel is one of the most elite posts any soldier can hold – only the very best of the Armed Forces are chosen for the honor. They are recruited from the 3rd U.S. Infantry, or “The Old Guard”.
Each guard stands watch over the Tomb for half an hour, after which the lone Sentinel will be relieved of his duty by another. The ceremony includes a white glove inspection of the rifle held by the Sentinel on guard.
The Sentinels are the most disciplined and precise soldiers that our Armed Forces have to offer. But even so, mishaps can happen.
At a recent Changing of the Guards ceremony, one guard proved just what it takes to be eligible for this prestigious role.
During the rifle inspection, his relieving Commander experienced a slip and dropped the rifle on the guard’s foot. To make matters worse, the bayonet went straight through the guard’s foot.
But if you’re expecting a reaction, think again. Apart from a slight flinch, this guard stayed at attention and continued the ceremony with the usual respect and precision. The Commanders finished the inspection and marched off.
In the clip below, taken by a visitor, you can see the extent of the injury as the guard marches by to leave his post. On his left dress shoe you can see blood seeping through the spot where the rifle landed.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is one of the most sacred sites in the US and it deserves to be honored and respected. This clip shows what an incredible service our Armed Forces perform to honor the fallen.
