Man punched by unknown woman who mistook his hat for a MAGA one

Daniel Sprague was enjoying a birthday treat with a trip to Nashville when he was punched in the face by a woman in a bar.

The retired NYPD Detective had been surprised with the trip by his wife for his birthday who also gifted him a red baseball cap with the words “Make Fifty Great Again.”

According to Daniel the woman mistook his hat for a “Make America Great Again” or MAGA hat, typically worn by President Trump supporters, and attacked him.

“I was outside with my friends when some (one) grabbed me from behind, spun me around, and punched me in the face,” Daniel told the New York Post.

“At first I thought it was a friend until I got hit. I couldn’t believe someone could get that upset.”

Daniel was also wearing a shirt with an American flag on it and the words “Making America Great Since 1970” when he was attacked by the unknown woman.

‘Wish me a happy birthday’

Both Daniel and his attacker were made to leave the bar where Daniel was celebrating his birthday with his wife and friend. He then reported the incident to the police who are investigating.

Daniel said he was in complete shock by what had happened to him.

“All night people were giving me thumbs up, smiles or some showing rage, until they walked up close and saw what hat said,” the retired police detective said. “Then they would wish me a happy birthday.”

He added: “I love Trump, but I wouldn’t hit someone who had a Bernie hat on. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.”

Daniel retired from the elite Emergency Service Unit of the NYPD in 2009.
