In a heartbreaking act of bravery, 41-year-old Alicia Leonardi lost her life while trying to rescue a dog from a speeding train in Plaistow, New Hampshire.
On June 2, Alicia was out walking near the train tracks with her ex-boyfriend and his dog, Jackson, who was off-leash.
Suddenly, as an oncoming locomotive blew its horn, Jackson darted onto the tracks. Without hesitation, Alicia and her ex-boyfriend both rushed to save the dog.
Tragically, the train struck them both. Alicia suffered fatal injuries, while her ex-boyfriend survived with minor wounds. Miraculously, Jackson escaped unharmed.
Alicia’s mother, Cathleen Collis, shared her grief with WMUR, describing her daughter as “a very happy, smiling, bubbly girl.” She spoke with heartache about the bond Alicia had with the dog, saying, “She loved that dog, that dog was everything to her… It’s just so sudden.”
Her cousin Joe Gatley remembered Alicia as “a very kindhearted person. Very strong-willed,” adding, “She had some tough times. We’ve been doing really well in life right now, and it’s just a tragedy.”
Joe Gatley also shared a powerful message in Alicia’s honor: “Live every day to the fullest because, you know, tomorrow’s not — there’s no guarantee.”
Alicia’s daughter Faith also expressed the deep loss the family feels: “My mom meant the world to me… We will keep her memory close.”
Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing with Amtrak and CSX police to fully understand the incident. Neighbors say this is not the first time someone has been hit by a train in this area, but Alicia’s heroic sacrifice has deeply shaken the community.
Police and family alike mourn the loss of a courageous woman who put the life of a dog — one she didn’t even own — above her own safety. Alicia’s selfless act of love is a reminder of the fragility of life and the power of compassion.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Alicia Leonardi’s family and loved ones during this unimaginable time.
