When Azita Milanian opted to go for a jog instead of dancing with her friends one night in Pasadena, California, little did she know the eventful and shocking evening she would end up having.
Jogging with her dogs along the Altadena foothills in May 1998, one of her dogs suddenly stopped and started digging at the dirt.
Azita couldn’t believe what she saw: two little feet sticking out of the dirt. Then, as if the helpless infant knew their was someone there, he started crying.
In desperation and absolute shock Azita said: “Please don’t die. I will never leave you. I love you.”
“He grabbed my wrist and stopped crying,” she said. “It was very emotional. What kind of sick human would do something like that? He still had his umbilical cord hanging from his stomach.”
The baby was rushed to the hospital, where he was cared for. His body temperature had dropped dangerously low, but he survived.
Even though a search was organized and rewards were offered for information leading to the discovery of his mother, she was never located. Authorities believed that she may have been an underage girl who didn’t know what to do and buried her child out of desperation.
Azita did consider adopting the baby boy, but she worried that the case had been too public and the boy would not be safe with her. She kept in contact as long as she could, but when he was adopted she was no longer able to find out how he was doing.
“I was hoping that he would find me, the same way we found each other that day,” Azita said.
After staff saw what a survivor this baby was they affectionately named him Baby Christian. The strong boy didn’t even find out he was adopted until he was 17. He was invited onto a radio show to take a DNA test to find out more about his ancestry. The producers found out about Azita’s role and invited her too to surprise him.
As soon as Azita saw Baby Christian, now called Matthew Whitaker, she started sobbing and said all her dreams had come true.
Matthew called Azita his angel. “I’m here today. I’ve lived a great life,” he said. “I was adopted into a great family. I couldn’t ask my parents for any more.”
