We live in a society where the elderly are often left behind. They’re lonely, they live in poverty, they’re served terrible food – they generally go unheard and unseen.
It seems obvious that we neglect their wants and needs, which affects their ability to go about their lives.
That’s why I was so happy to read about this cashier who went against the norm – and is a role model that we should all learn from.
It was early in November in 2017 when this incident played out in a grocery store in Mississippi.
In the middle of the lunch rush, an old man stood at the checkout and was paying for his items when he stuck his hand in his pocket for some change.
But the man soon became frustrated. He counted wrong, it took a long time, and as his hands and voice started to shake he started appologising to everyone around him.
But nobody was ready for how the cashier would react.
One person standing in line waiting was Spring Herbison Bowlin. In a Facebook post that’s been shared thousands of times she describes the moment.
“This beautiful cashier takes his hands and dumps all the change on the counter and says, ‘This is not a problem, honey. We will do this together.’ He continues to apologize to both of us as we reassure him it’s ok. They get his transaction handled and he shuffles away,” she writes.
Spring was completely moved by the cashier’s touching effort. She continues:
I looked at this wonderful woman and said, ‘Thank-you for being so patient with him.’ She shakes her head and replies, ‘You shouldn’t have to thank me, baby. What’s wrong with our world is we’ve forgotten how to love one another.’ I want to be more like her.”
