In a mark of solidarity with the U.S. the American flag lit up the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps.
“Switzerland is sending hope and strength to the United States of America,” the Embassy of Switzerland wrote alongside an image they posted of the incredible sight.
Light artist Gerry Hofstetter was chosen to illuminate the mountain daily starting March 24, according to tourist website Zermatt Matterhorn.
“As it stands, the USA, is the country that has been most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis with the highest number of confirmed cases. Our thoughts are with all American people at this unprecedented time,” a release from Zermatt Matterhorn reads.
“May our message convey solidarity and give you hope and strength. We look forward to meeting again at the foot of the Matterhorn, we are all in this together.”
The U.S. is the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic with more than 670,000 cases and more than 34,000 COVID-19 deaths.
“The Matterhorn has always been a symbol of Switzerland and a place of strength and stability. Zermatt is convinced: as strong as the Matterhorn, so strong must the society stand together, be anchored and let the storm pass,” the tourism company said.
“With the illumination, Zermatt wants to give people a sign of hope and solidarity in this difficult time of the Coronavirus pandemic. Just like the motto ‘Light is hope’. The village shows solidarity with all people who are currently suffering and is grateful to all those who are helping to overcome the crisis.”
Over the past few weeks, other projections have included hearts, hashtags such as “#hope” and “#AllOfUs,” and the flags of countries that the coronavirus has hit hard have also been projected.
Standing at 14,690 feet tall, the Matterhorn sits on the border of Switzerland and Italy, according to National Geographic.
What a wonderful way to remind us all that we are in this together; we may be in isolation and feel cut off but this shows we are not alone.
