Life is incredibly unexpected; you never know what will happen. You never know the last time you will ever talk to someone or see them. And in this case, a family is heartbroken because of the tragic end to their matriarch.
82-year-old Florence Kelly was the life of the party. She would take pride in her appearance and dress younger than she was. Had you asked her son just a few weeks ago, he would have told you confidently that he expected his mother to live another decade easily.
However, everything turned into a nightmare last month. Florence Kelly’s gray Honda Accord was entering an intersection in Dallas, Texas when out of nowhere her car was brutally struck by a Toyota Avalon.

While Kelly had been rushed to the hospital, she died shortly after arriving. A 13-year-old passenger in the Avalon also suffered serious injuries but is stable for now.
Dallas Police immediately began investigating the accident. Security footage from the crash emerged, depicting several passengers and the driver from the Avalon running from the scene after the accident.
Florence Kelly who was known as Katherine by those who knew her was well loved. Her son Donovan Kelly is devastated at his loss. “I just cannot fathom some of the things that we’ve heard, that we’ve learned about him. It’s just unbelievable,” he said.
A month after her passing, her son is still in disbelief at his loss and pain. “There was nothing that she would not give us, nothing that she would not do for us, and that’s gone. We have the memories and the example that she set that we certainly strive to follow. But to be able to see her and talk to her, we don’t have that anymore,” he said.
He mentioned that she loved her children and grandchildren a lot. And she was her husband’s primary caretaker in the wake of his stroke. The Kellys lost a mother and a grandmother; the family’s matriarch.
The driver of the Avalon has now been identified as a 12-year-old minor. Because of his age, no more details have been provided about his arrest and authorities are not planning on revealing them either. While the arrest has brought some closure to the family, they still hope justice will be served and age will not be a mitigating factor.
“He’s killed somebody. He’s taken an innocent life, and there are consequences for your actions. I don’t really care how old you are. He consciously decided to get behind the wheel of the car and drive it with no driver’s license, obviously no real driving experience, and basically hurtled into our mother’s car, killing her,” Donovan Kelly said.
This family’s loss is immeasurable. We are sending them all our condolences and hope they are able to heal from it.
