Every time another story of animal cruelty surfaces, it’s like a punch to the heart.
While countless pets are showered with affection, others — like one tiny puppy named Baby Gina — are left to suffer in silence.
Baby Gina didn’t ask for much. Just a warm touch. A kind voice. But instead, her owners gave her nothing but pain, and then walked away for good.
Alone and starving in a Bronx apartment
When her abusers abandoned her inside a Bronx apartment building, Baby Gina didn’t just give up.
Weak and emaciated, she summoned what little strength she had and began to crawl through the halls, praying someone would see her. She was little more than skin and bones, her eyes sunken, her spirit flickering like a candle in the wind.
And then — finally — someone did see her.
A tenant spotted the frail figure barely clinging to life and followed her down the hall. When she realized it was a puppy, her heart sank. Baby Gina could barely stand.

Without a moment’s hesitation, she reached out to NYC Second Chance Rescue —a nonprofit dedicated to saving and rehabilitating critically injured, abused, and neglected dogs and cats, especially those facing euthanasia in overcrowded shelters.
Since their founding in 2009, this life-saving organization has rescued over 16,000 animals, giving them a second chance at the love and care they deserve.
Fighting for her life
And when they heard about Gina, their rescuers arrived swiftly, hearts breaking at the sight of the sick, skeletal pup.
She was rushed to an emergency animal hospital, where doctors discovered the extent of her suffering: anemia, a urinary tract infection, and a dangerous risk of refeeding syndrome — a potentially fatal condition that can happen when a starving body starts to eat again.
Veterinarians sprang into action. Time was not on Baby Gina’s side.
“There are so many unknowns. We are just praying she can pull through. She is just a baby,” the rescue team wrote on Facebook.
Baby Gina begins to heal
The story of the little fighter touched thousands online. Strangers from around the country sent love and prayers.
Despite the odds, Baby Gina began to respond to care. She was still in the hospital, but she was warm, safe, and — finally — loved.

“She is happy, she is loved, and she is recovering,” Second Chance Rescue shared. “She even has a bunch of new sweaters to keep her warm while she gains weight.”
Justice is coming
Authorities have launched an investigation into who left this sweet pup to die. The rescue community is determined not just to heal Baby Gina’s body — but also to bring her abuser to justice.
By January 2025, Baby Gina’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Day by day, she grew stronger — her eyes brighter, her tail wagging again, and the spark of life returning to her step. By February, she was finally ready to leave her painful past behind and start a new chapter.

That’s when two kind-hearted people stepped forward, eager to give Gina the forever home she had always deserved.
“There’s no way better to enjoy a Sunday than looking at photos of Baby Gina leaving the hospital with her new family. Baby Gina has inspired many; she quickly became a household name after we rescued her. Her story was harrowing: abuse, neglect, starvation, and abandonment. She overcame it all and is ready to live the rest of her life free from pain and suffering.
She is the reason why we don’t give up.
She will now only know love and happiness. Thank you for helping us save her. She is one lucky gal,” NYC Second Chance Rescue wrote.
Because after everything she’s endured, Baby Gina isn’t just a survivor — she’s a miracle.
