How many holes are really in this shirt? Most people get it wrong!

There are countless ways to keep your brain sharp. We all want to feel alert and energized, so it’s important to keep those brain cells active. Personally, I usually turn to crosswords and Sudoku when I have a free moment — but lately, I’ve been exploring a lot of online brain teasers too.

Most of us spend at least an hour a day at a computer. Sure, we don’t always have to think hard — but that’s actually the perfect opportunity to give our brains a little workout.

I’ve been doing it more and more, and honestly, it feels great!

Brain teasers are fun

Technology dominates our daily lives now, but it wasn’t always that way. Back in school, we mostly used pen and paper. Every now and then, our teacher would hand out a brain teaser or two that we had to solve within a certain amount of time.

Those puzzles weren’t always easy — but that’s exactly what made them so fun. I’ve always loved a challenge that makes you think. And the best part? It’s even better when you can solve it together with others.

The brain teasers I loved as a kid are just as fun today.

Earlier this week, I came across a picture puzzle online that took me quite a while to figure out.

Here’s the question: How many holes are in this shirt?

According to several websites covering this puzzle, only about 1 in 7 adults get it right on their first try.

That motivated me to try to solve it quickly too—but I thought it would be more fun to give you some options so you could figure it out on your own:

How many holes are in this shirt?

  • 2
  • 4
  • 6
  • 8

Take a moment to really think about it. There are probably more holes than you notice at first glance! Let your brain work for a few seconds before you decide.

The Answer: 8 Holes

The correct answer is 8 — that’s option D!

How is that right? Let’s break it down.

  1. There are two holes for the front of the shirt,
  2. two holes for the sleeves,
  3. one hole for the neck,
  4. and one hole at the bottom for the rest of the body.

That gives you six holes on the front of the shirt.

But here’s the tricky part: a shirt has two sides. Since you can see through it, the same holes exist on the back as well. That’s two more holes, bringing the total to eight!

Pretty tricky, right?
