John Dixon probably looks like the average grandfather in the house next door. Don’t let appearances fool you, though; the 88-year-old is not someone you should be messing with. Five robbers found that out the hard way, experiencing first-hand what John is capable of when they had the rotten luck to run into him during a robbery.
Dixon was walking on Raglan Street, London, when he stumbled across five thieves attempting to rob a young woman. Himself a Special Air Services veteran, he knew he had to act.
What he did is now being hailed by thousands online!
The SAS, created as an elite fighting force for Britain during World War II, is known for its rigorous training, and production of some of the finest soldiers around.
Just ask Nixon; he certainly knows. The 88-year-old may have left the armed forces a long time ago, but it would appear that he’s retained many of his skills.
He illustrated that recently, when he came across a woman being attacked in broad daylight on a street in Kentish Town, northwest London.
Nixon’s hour of bravery
When Nixon encountered the five thieves, he decided to try and give the woman time to run away. He attempted to divert the men, but the robbers were not so easily dissuaded. Things then escalated quickly.
“My initial thoughts were to divert their attention away from the girl who was screaming. I shouted ‘leave her alone’. But they turned on me, saying ‘We’ll take your money instead’ and I said ‘No you don’t’. Kids this age are full of bravado, you see, they weren’t expecting a surprise,” Nixon told the Daily Mail.
John served one of the attackers with a karate-chop to the neck. He went on to disable two of them – suffering shallow stab wounds in the process – before the robbers decided they’d bit off more than they could chew. The assailants ran away, their tails firmly between their legs.
A passer-by, who witnessed the attack, called for a police offer, and Nixon was taken to the hospital. He was treated for his wounds and, thankfully, his injuries weren’t life-threatening.
Nixon, a widower and father to an adult daughter, was praised by the local police for his “extraordinary courage.”
Of course, it’s hardly the first time Nixon has danced with death.
The Londoner has since revealed that he trained as a commando in the 1940s and was part of an elite fighting unit that fought in the Korean War. He also told how he had participated in intelligence operations all over the world, including places such as Egypt, the Middle East and Germany.
Just another day
To him, this alarming encounter was just another instalment in a life packed full of adventures.
“‘I’ve been shot in the leg and even bitten by a snake, the venom lay dormant in my spine for years. I’ve been near death so many times that situation just doesn’t worry me. The woman ran off screaming but I hope she is okay,” Nixon said.
According to the Daily Mail, no arrests have yet been made in connection with the incident, but we can only hope the criminals will be brought to justice.
What an incredible hero John Nixon is! The man himself may not describe himself as such, but we know the woman he saved – and very much us, as well – do!
At a time when civil courage is perhaps more important than ever, Nixon is a shining light we can all hope to follow.
