Brittany Bakenhaster was a happy, healthy 3-year-old. She could say her ABC’s, knew the Bible and loved to sing in church.
But then, one day, everything would change.
During one evening, Brittany’s mom, Jamie, heard terrible noises coming from her daughters room. The chilling sounds sent her mom racing into the little girl’s room.
“It was a biting and almost choking noise. Like a gurgling, can’t breathe, struggling,” Jamie recalled.
The little girl was having a scary seizure — the first of many.
Doctors could do nothing to help her, and it seemed as though death was near.
After that terrible situation, Brittany was rushed to the hospital. The little girl was soon diagnosed with epilepsy, a seizure disorder her mother had as well.
But sadly, Brittany’s experience would be nothing like mom Jamie’s condition. Jamie had always being able to control her epilepsy with medicine.
Jamie was optimistic it would do the same for Brittany but regardless of the many medications doctors tried, Brittany’s seizures only got worse. It tortured Jamie.
Brittany had to wear a helmet to prevent injury.
Eventually, the family was devastated physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Jamie was also blaming herself for giving her daughter this sickness.
”As a mother you feel so responsible. They’re your flesh; they’ve lived in you. And when she would pull at me to help her and I couldn’t,” Jamie said.
”I blamed myself a lot; I thought, ‘I’ve given my daughter this sickness.'”
Soon, another problem also appeared to the family – they were taking a financial beating.
“One bottle of medication would cost $50, and we couldn’t afford it,” Jamie recalled, with Brittany’s dad Bruce adding that Brittany needed 24-hour care as she continued to seize both day and night.
All the seizures were taking a toll on Brittany, eventually leaving her unable to sit up or respond to her name.
She couldn’t focus or look at her parents, her life was turning into a real nightmare.
”It was as if she was ‘totally gone’,” mom Jamie said.
Her grief-stricken parents felt helpless and turned their hope to higher powers.
Jamie took comfort in Psalm 37:4-5 and cried out to the Lord for help.
“He said, ‘Delight thyself also in the Lord and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. God said, ‘Don’t look at what you see, look at what you don’t see. Tell me and speak what you want,’” Jamie explained.
“That’s what I want,” Jamie told God.
“I want my little girl back, normal, like those kids I see that are running and playing.”
Unfortunately, her prayers remained unanswered.
Things only appeared to get worse for Brittany, who was then 5 years old.
She would end up in the hospital, where the doctors said there was nothing more they could do.
”They ran one more brainwave, and they said, ‘Her whole brain is seizuring, so we can’t even take out that part of her brain or put a shunt in to help her; there’s nothing else we can do,’” Jamie recalled.
The doctors sent her home, where she could at least be in her own bed.
“I knew she was close to death. But, I thought, ‘Lord, you said you would bring it to pass,’” Jamie said.
Unwilling to give up, Jamie spent a sleepless night praying for Brittany’s recovery.
In the morning, it seemed that she received an answer to those prayers.
After not responding or talking to Jamie at all for a year, Brittany began to speak.
When morning came, Brittany started saying Jesus’ name over and over. Brittany also said she saw angels, according to CBN.
When the mother went back to the doctor, Brittany was healed. And after that, something else happened.
The little girl began to have headaches whenever she took her own medication. Was her condition worsening? Quite the opposite.
Brittanys epilepsy had completely gone away.
The daughter wasn’t the only one in the family to experience this, though. A couple of months after Brittanys miraculous recovery, Jamie suffered headaches that got stronger when she took her medication.
Initially, her doctor thought it was just stress, but her neurologist performed an EEG that pointed to something much different.
“He said, ‘A miracle has taken place. Your brainwave’s now clear. Would you like to come off your medicine?’ And sure enough, I did”, said Jamie.
Decades later, Brittany and her mother are completely seizure-free. Their only explanation for the recovery is proof of a higher power.
