Florida trooper drives into the path of a wrong-way drunk driver and saves runners’ lives

A Florida state trooper is now home recovering from what could have been a fatal crash.

On Monday officials released dash cam footage from Florida Highway Patrol Master Trooper Toni Schuck’s vehicle that showed her driving into the path of a drunk driver.

Schuck’s response prevented the driver from slamming into a 10K race, which was taking place nearby.

The terrifying scene took place Sunday around 8:45 a.m. on I-275 in Palmetto, Florida.

A portion of the road was closed for the Armed Forces Skyway 10K Race on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. However, a driver, now identified as Kay Watts, 52, ignored several signs and barricades

Two troopers attempted to block Watts using their cruisers, but their attempt was unsuccessful, and she continued to drive at a high rate of speed towards the section of the road that was closed for the race.

“Trooper Schuck responded and drove her vehicle directly into the path of the oncoming drunk driver,” the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles wrote.

Dash cam footage from her vehicle shows the moment of impact. Because she risked her life, those who were in the race lived.

Luckily she survived. She and Watts were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Both have since been discharged.
