Imagine a dog bounding toward you.
Of course, as an animal lover you’d be happy that a dog wanted to greet you and play.
But this was something completely different.
In early December, an elderly woman in North Carolina was involved in a shocking event. Thankfully there was someone nearby to help.
Personally, I love dogs but this story scares me.
The woman, who is in her 60s, was out walking along the street when the incident happened. A camera attached to a nearby house captured the whole scary sequence. Viewers be warned, the images and video below are upsetting.
As she walked along the sidewalk a dog approaches her, with its tail wagging and she stops.
But as one dog comes, another follows until she is surrounded by a pack of mixed pit bull dogs.
Then they start viciously attacking her, pulling at her clothes and trying to drag her to the floor.
The victim started screaming for help and thankfully a neighbor heard her cries and ran outside.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, she immediately ran at the dogs, picked up the woman’s bag and used it to frighten then off.
“I hear someone screaming. I wasn’t sure if it was around the house in this area or where, but the screaming was, ‘Help me! Help me!’ — very weak sounds,” the neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said. “The lady was laid down in the driveway, four dogs around her biting. So I run to her immediately. I was screaming, ‘Get out. Get out.’”
‘Deep injury’
Due to her courage and quick thinking actions the brave neighbor chased the dogs away. She described the state of the victim after the dogs had run off.
“She had pajamas. I pushed up the pajamas. She had a very large and deep injury. I think I saw her bone.”
Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Werber spoke to Inside Edition about the incident.
“They looked like they were running the streets, probably very hungry, and she looked like she had a bag, a purse, and I am sure they have learned that what often is in a bag is food and that is how it possibly started,” he said.
The injured woman was taken to hospital and the owner of the dogs was charged with assault inflicting serious injury in connection to the incident. He faced a $3,700 fine if convicted.

Experts say if a dog attacks you grab what you can and hit it between the eyes. Thankfully there was someone nearby to help this poor woman being attacked by multiple dogs.
